10 tips for your first trip to Marrakech

Marrakech is a city that awakens the senses: the smell of spices, the colour of the souks, the sound of the muezzins. But for a first-time traveller, it can also be overwhelming. At TILILA TOURS we've been picking up travellers in Marrakech for years to take them to the desert, and these are the tips we always give before they land.

1 Learn to haggle (and enjoy it)

In Marrakech's souks, the starting price is usually double or triple what it really costs. Haggling isn't a fight: it's a social ritual. Smile, stay calm and offer half the starting price. If you can't agree, no worries: say goodbye politely. Sometimes the seller will call you back.

2 Carry cash

Although more and more places accept cards, cash is still king in the souks, taxis and many local restaurants. ATMs usually work fine, but always keep some money on you.

3 Don't miss Jemaa el-Fnaa square at sunset

During the day, the square is a juice and coconut market. As the sun sets, it transforms into a spectacle of street food, musicians and storytellers. It's touristy, yes, but it's a unique experience. Eat at the busiest stalls: where there's a queue, there's good food.

4 Ask permission before photographing people

In Morocco, many people —especially women and older artisans— aren't comfortable being photographed. Ask politely. If they ask for money in return, respect their decision and decide whether you want to pay.

5 Try the tajine, but also the street food

Tajine is delicious, but don't limit yourself to tourist restaurants. Try the briouats (stuffed pastries), msmenn (Moroccan pancake) and the snails (street snails). If you see a queue of locals, join it.

6 Beware of spontaneous "guides"

In the medina it's common for someone to approach you offering to take you somewhere. Some are genuine and friendly, but others will lead you to shops where they get a commission. If you don't want a guide, politely ignore them and go your way. If you do want one, hire an official guide.

7 Use ride apps or negotiate the taxi price

Marrakech taxis rarely use the meter (or it's "broken"). Negotiate the price before getting in. Another option is inDriver, a popular app in Morocco where you propose the price and drivers accept or counter.

8 Respect the local culture

Marrakech is a Muslim city and conservative in many ways. Avoid very revealing clothing outside hotels and resorts. During Ramadan, many locals fast during the day, so avoid eating and drinking in public ostentatiously.

9 Book accommodation inside the medina (at least one night)

Sleeping in a traditional riad is a priceless experience. Courtyards full of plants, rooftops with city views and a Moroccan breakfast on the terrace are unforgettable moments.

10 Escape the city to the desert
